Fair Trade and Organic
Fair Trade is an international system of doing business based on dialogue, transparency and respect. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions for producers and workers in developing countries. Behind the principles and goals of Fair Trade is a rigorous international system of monitoring, auditing and certification.
Recent concerns about health and the growing consumer demand for organic products have lead to more and more industries finding organic alternatives, and the coffee industry is no different. For a coffee to be certified organic, it must be grown in a manner that excludes the use of fertilizers, pesticides, hormone treatments, or steroids. Organic farmers instead must rely on superior growing practices, natural fertilizers and alternative methods of pest and disease control.
Las Hermosas
Las Hermosas is Reunion Island’s first major project involving a direct and long-term relationship with farmers at origin. In the small region of Tolima, Colombia, a co-op of 32 farmers produce one of the best Colombian coffees we have ever discovered.
The Las Hermosas project started in 2004 when we discovered an exceptional Colombian coffee from a farming co-operative in the South Tolima region. To support this co-op, we have committed to donating to projects that improve the standard of living, while ensuring a consistent supply of world-class coffee for our customers.
Swiss Water Process
Many people are choosing to drink decaffeinated coffee for a variety of personal reasons. However, not all decaffeination processes are the same. You see, in most decaffeination methods, chemical solvents such as methylene chloride or ethyl acetate are used to strip caffeine molecules from the green coffee bean.
Alternatively, the unique SWISS WATER® Process uses pure water from British Columbia, Canada to gently remove the caffeine until the coffee beans are 99.9% caffeine-free, while maintaining the bean's distinctive origin and flavor characteristics.
It's decaffeinated coffee without compromise.
Rainforest Alliance
The Rainforest Alliance (RA) is an NGO that works on a not-for-profit basis, helping farmers improve not just their bottom line, but also their crops and their way of life. Their mandate is to protect ecosystems and the people and wildlife that depend on them by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior. Companies, cooperatives and landowners that participate in our programs meet rigorous standards that conserve biodiversity and provide sustainable livelihoods.
With over 49 million acres of farm certified, RA is assisting those in coffee, as well as growers of bananas, citrus, cocoa, and flowers. Working only with donations and fundraisers, the RA is able to share more with the farmers, while keeping their operating costs as low as possible. The standards they impose on their farms help the farmers secure high prices for their coffees because of quality above anything else.
